We recently saw the shocking statistic that at2 degreesof warming we will lose both coffee production and chocolate production. If that isn’t enough to make you worry about climate change then nothing will.
Not everyone has a desire to ‘do good’ with their investments but more (not all) of your colleagues do at least want to not ‘do bad’. There are several options on a spectrum when it comes to the impact that your pension funds for example have.
No adjustment – adjustment to remove the worst behaved companies – adjustment to only invest in the best 25% of companies – adjustment to invest only in companies that are on track to limit their impact to 1.5 degree of warming – adjustment to only invest in companies making a positive impact.
For most of us our pension funds are one of the biggest assets we have. As they are typically invested in all the companies of the world then they have a small share of the environmental impact of all of those companies. From Shell (oil) to Orsted (wind turbines). The nearer we get to retirement the more chance our pension fund will have a bigger carbon footprint than the choice of car we drive or diet we follow.
It is hard to understand the impact of our pensions in a clear way but at Altor we have been able to carbon footprint the main Phoenix pension funds and compared them with the market average and the alternatives. This is not an exact science at this stage because not all companies publish their impact data but more and more data becomes available every year.
